How to travel in comfort and Style

You should take a travel pillow

When I travel by air or train it is usually a longer trip than a few hours.  A trip by plane to Singapore for instance takes 8 hours and to Los Angeles it is around 12 hours so comfort is very important so that I arrive not too stressed or overtired.

These are long trips and it gets quite uncomfortable and difficult to sleep without a good travel pillow. The airline travel pillows are only just better than having none at all.  I'm not a good sleeper anytime unless I am in my own bed so getting a sleep aid like a comfy pillow for traveling is a great benefit to me.  If I cant get at least a couple of hours sleep on a long journey then I feel like a zombie when I arrive.

There are a lot of travel pillows out there now including ones made from memory foam, filled with buckwheat or are light and inflatable.  You can use them also as a foot rest if you need to to relieve the pressure on your legs.  The best one for you is entirely a personal matter so you may have to buy more than one before you get the RIGHT one for you but choose one with good neck support.  Most will fold up and will fit in your suitcase or travel bag without taking up too much room.

Traveling is meant to be fun so take that travel pillow so you can arrive ready to explore and not ready to collapse.

How I discovered the perfect travel handbag

There was this average, 40ish woman who was searching for the best travel handbag but she always found something unsuitable about each of her purchases. There was always a part that wasn’t right and she was never really happy with any of them. She had 4 bags by that time occupying precious space in her wardrobe.  Does that sound familiar?  Well that has all changed and she would like to give you the benefit of her experiences. Of course that woman was me!

In July 2007 I was again going away on a trip to France and I was looking for a new travel bag as the one I used on the previous trip was too big and the one from before was too small and it was then that I came across the perfect one for me.  Security features were my main priority with so many reports about bag snatching in Europe.  This one time it to have slash proof panels on the bottom and the front.  Another feature was separate compartments including one for the digital camera with a Velcro strap to secure it, another for my cell phone and a separate outside side pocket for an umbrella and/or water bottle.

I finally found what I needed and wanted most had to have the following 6 features:

  • The right size

big enough to carry what I needed for the day including a small digital camera and an umbrella or water bottle without being too bulky

  • Adjustable shoulder strap

to expand to be worn across the body during the day and can shorten again for evening to be worn over the shoulder.  Also the strap should be wide enough for comfort so that it doesn’t dig into your shoulder after a long day exploring

  • Security features

anti theft features such as an anti slash strap or one that was strong

  • Separate inner compartments

for a  small wallet, room key/card, lipstick, tissues, digital camera and cell phone etc

  • Serviceable colour

black, navy or dark brown in colour to go with everything, to look good enough to take out of an evening and wont show a mark or two on it

  • Water repellent

in case of rain to protect the contents and everything else you have on you that you can fit in it

I don’t know why I hadn’t worked it out earlier, maybe Im a slow learner.

The only other ‘must have’ for that trip was to take one handbag that would go from day use, travelling around all day, to be smart enough to take it out with me in the evening.  A dark colour that would colour coordinated with my outfits and not show marks was also important but not essential.

Well I found it!  What was it?  Well it was the Pacsafe Citysafe 200.  This is the best travel handbag I have used and so I took it on a subsequent trip to Asia and I am still using it for everyday use since I came home as it is a good size for all the extra ‘stuff’ I carry on a day to basis as well.  If you need a smaller version they have one of these as well, the Citysafe100 so you should find one that is right for you.  I did come across another bag though that is worth mention and it has a slimmer style and attractive design and is the Vertical Micro Fiber Security Purse.  Have a look at these bags from Magellans at Magellan's Web Specials.  All of them sell for under $60US.

Everyone is different and we all have different likes, needs and wants (as we are all individuals thank goodness) so you may want to prioritise these items differently.  I also have a small travel handbag I use occasionally when I just need to carry a small wallet and cell phone so I realize that the use dictates the bag.  An example for me is that I would always take a small clutch purse if I was going on a cruise for formal nights even if I had another day bag.

Apply at least 4 features listed above and you will also find the best travel handbag for you, guaranteed!

Luggage tips
Pack your bag, then unpack it and take out 1/4 of the clothes.  You wont need as many as you think.
Rolling clothes is a good way to stop wrinkling of clothes in your suitcase.
Take a photo of your luggage in case it gets lost, easier than trying to describe it.

Take plastic bags to put anything wet in such as swimming costume.
Pack small snap seal plastic bags for items that may leak.
I also put a collapsed soft sided overnight bag in the bottom of my suitcase so I have an extra bag for purchases on my way home.
