Pack a spare pair of glasses in your suitcase or carry on bag

Don’t overload your carry on bag, you may have to carry it a long way to the airport gate
While traveling
Allow enough time getting to the airport and departure to reduce stress
Make sure you have all your travel documents before you leave home
In the plane make sure you move around the cabin regularly
Drink water to keep hydrated and avoid alcohol if you can

While you are away

Don’t drink the local water, but if you must, then only water that has been boiled
If you know the water for your destination is unsafe then don’t have drinks with ice either
Don’t eat from street venders
Avoid eating shellfish and any uncooked food
Eat fruit you can peel or wash in bottled water
Use insect repellent containing DEET and if you will be in a bad mosquito area spray your
clothes with pyrethrum

Cooking for a Healthy Diet

Healthy cooking can improve your overall health by reducing fat in the arteries and by consuming less sugar you can help keep blood sugar levels low and help with the prevention of diabetes.  When you reach your middle years this is more important than ever.

Reducing the fat you add in your cooking does not necessarily have to mean tasteless food. You can use olive oil instead of butter, use fresh herbs such as parsley, chives, rosemary, basil and sage to name a few, and these can provide a ton of flavor without causing the body to retain water or raise blood pressure like salt does. They are easy to grow in your garden or in pots so you always have fresh herbs available. Another alternative to regular salt is a sodium reduced one. The one I use is 50% less sodium but has the full taste.

Cutting back heavily on the amount of fatty oils used will also help the body control cholesterol levels. You dont have to cut out the oil completely, just cut down on how much you use.  Also by using a non stick pan you can reduce the fat even more. Steaming food also is a good option especially for vegetables.

Healthy cooking can improve many aspects of your life and could possibly add many healthy years as well. The most obvious ways to staying healthy are keeping cholesterol low and maintaining a healthy blood pressure. It is never too late to begin a healthy diet. Your health is worth it.

We all eat the wrong foods sometimes (I am a chocoholic) but changing how we cook our everyday foods and trying to eat a well balanced healthy diet will help us stay healthy in the long term.

Do I have a cold or is it an allergy?

It's probably an allergy if:
You have no fever.
Mucus secretions are clear and runny.
Sneezes occur in a rapid, multiple sequence.
Your nose, ears, and throat feel itchy.
Symptoms last longer than 7 days.
Your symptoms get worse when you are in one environment, and get better when you are not.
Your nose, ears, and throat are not as itchy after you take a antihistamine.
You feel stuffy and congested.

Seasickness

Now this article is close to my heart.  I have always suffered with motion sickness all
my life but when I first cruised to the Inside Passage of Alaska I didnt think we
were going to the open sea and I thought I would have been ok.  Well that wasnt the case and for about 24 hours I was seasick.  Luckily that was the only time we were in, or passed the open sea but it did remind me that seasickness feels like hell.  It can ruin your vacation.

On my second cruise to the Caribbean I researched a lot and came up with a product
called Meclizine Hydrochloride (brand name I used was Bonine).  This works wonders but I did experience a bit of diarreah on that trip when on sea days although it was not rough seas at all.  The third trip was to the Mexican Riviera and this time I only got some light
headedness on sea days but I was still overall ok.  Well on the fourth time on the Far East Asian cruise I think I got it all worked out.  On this trip the seas were rough and many people were sick, but not me.  I took the Bonine and also ginger tablets and I was fine with no other symptoms.  The ginger settles the stomach. I could eat and walk around the ship and the only trouble was keeping my balance, but that was the ship and not my my problem.  I will now take both the bonine and ginger tablets for future cruises.

This has been my experience and a friend of mine uses the sea sick bands but I havent wanted to chance that.  She doesnt suffer from motion sickness at other times so I will stick to my tried and true method. Please read the label first though for any medication you take as it may interfere with your other medications or conditions.

How To Travel With No Jet Lag
By Trevor John, guest writer

It's generally accepted that it takes about a day to recover from each hour's time zone changes. So is it possible to travel and yet experience
no jet lag? Or at the very least, are you able to minimize the effects of jet lag?

If you regularly travel on business trips, you may well cross time zones, often at short notice. Which means you don't always get the option of preparing in advance to help adjust your body clock.

And if you're on vacation, the last thing you want to do is spend the first few days of your precious holiday time adjusting to the local time.

Whilst I can't promise you will travel and suffer absolutely no jetlag, these tips will help you adjust as quickly as possible.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water on the flight. Avoid alcohol and caffeine (coffee, cola and even strong tea) as these dehydrate us.
  • Get exercise on your flight. It's easy to sit back and stay in your seat for the whole flight. Instead, follow the instructions in the seat pocket in front of you and get some exercise. Pace the aisles if need be.
  • Follow the time clock of your destination as soon as you board your flight. You might as well start adjusting sooner rather than later and these hours of adjustment would otherwise be wasted.
  • When you arrive at your destination, follow your regular patterns. Go to sleep at your regular time. Set the alarm clock for your regular wake up time (if you're on vacation, you can ignore this one).
  • Don't beat yourself up if you don't adjust immediately. Give your body chance to adjust.

Take Acidopholous when traveling

Acidopholous is just one of many "good bacteria" in your colon.  It is natural, and will replace the bad flora in your system.

There are some yoghurts and milks sold with emphasis on high acidopholous so I suggest to start eating some of these for a few weeks before an overseas vacation.

If you are going to a third world country then take acidopholous capsules with you to take everyday.
